In 1943, after more than four centuries of experience as winegrowers in the family-run estate, Nadal produced its first bottle of sparkling wine. Under the vision of Ramon Nadal Giró and faithful to the traditional method, the first Nadal Brut was born. At that time, production principles were established based on the pressing and vinification of the estate’s own harvest and the long aging periods in the cellar, which were a clear declaration of intent for what 80 years later would become Corpinnat.
As a result of the alliance of six historic wineries in Penedès (Gramona, Llopart, Nadal, Recaredo, Sabaté i Coca, Torelló), on April 10, 2018, we presented the European Union collective brand called Corpinnat in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. A new quality seal to highlight the origin and production process of sparkling wines, with one of the most demanding regulations in the world, which coincides with and honours the principles established by Ramon Nadal Giró in the foundation of Cavas Nadal.
The territory
The word Corpinnat comes from three different words that join into a single concept. Cor (meaning heart in Catalan, and referring to the heart of the territory) + Pinnae (the Latin origin of the word Penedès) + nat (meaning born in in Catalan). These three words merge to deliver a very clear message: born in the heart of Penedès.
This is the first fundamental characteristic of Corpinnat. These are great sparkling wines produced in the wine-growing region of Penedès, the pioneering territory in Spain that almost 150 years ago saw the birth of the first bottles. Thus, any corpinnat comes from grapes grown in the heart of the Penedès wine region, where the climate and landscape shape a unique character and style.
The values of corpinnat
Origin of Corpinnat
Corpinnat are sparkling wines produced exclusively in the Penedès wine region, reflecting the personality of a territory. This is why we are committed to the native and historic grape varieties of Penedès, those that best express the terroir and are the protagonists of our sparkling wines. At Nadal, we produce most of them with the traditional blend of xarel·lo, macabeu, and parellada, while also embracing other interesting varieties like malvasia de Sitges and xarel·lo vermell.
Sustainability and environment
Our love for the land leads us to a firm commitment to respecting and preserving it. This is why all Corpinnat vineyards are 100% organic and hand-harvested to preserve the quality of each grape until it reaches the presses. Additionally, at Nadal, we are committed with harvesting by hand to keep each vine in optimal conditions, as well as to the maintenance and constant improvement of dry farming viticulture inherited from our ancestors. Ultimately, we prioritize the most sustainable practices that align with those that best allow us to express the personality of our vineyards in each bottle.
Own production
Corpinnat wines are entirely produced on the estate, following the traditional or champenoise method, emphasizing the style and quality of grape pressing and vinification. Furthermore, at Nadal, we are winegrowers and exclusively use grapes from our estate to create our corpinnat sparkling wines. The family winery is surrounded by 80 hectares of vineyards, some of which are up to 80 years old.
Quality
A careful production process is key to creating great sparkling wines. This is why any corpinnat must age in the bottle for a minimum of 18 months before being marketed, always striving for the highest quality. In the case of Nadal, its sparkling wines are marketed with bottle aging ranging from 30 months to 26 years in the RNG20 Brut Nature 1997 magnums.
Winegrowers
Corpinnat is also a commitment to the Penedès region and the preservation of its landscape. Corpinnat is firmly committed to Penedès’ winegrowers, establishing long-term contracts with them at a guaranteed minimum price that increases year after year without exception.
Innovation, rigour, and self-demand
To preserve all these values, Corpinnat wineries undergo very exhaustive external audits every year. The commitment to offering a quality product to the consumer is firm, which is why the term Corpinnat is always clearly visible on the front label so that consumers can identify this mark of excellence. Additionally, all labels include the name of the producer and the disgorgement date of each sparkling wine.
An open brand
Any winery that meets all the outlined requirements can be Corpinnat. If both the vineyards and the winery are located within the Corpinnat territory and fully comply with the Corpinnat regulations, they can apply to join the brand. After passing audits for two consecutive harvests, as well as an annual general audit, the winery becomes part of Corpinnat. Following this process, today Corpinnat consists of 12 wineries, with others currently undergoing audits and set to join soon.
