Salvatge, the Nadal iconic sparkling wine

1984: The birth of a legend

The first harvest of Salvatge was released in 1984, making a strong bet to create a surprising sparkling wine, unconventional in the Penedès landscape until then. That vintage was characterized by having perfect climatic conditions, with clearly marked seasons. The wines that resulted from it, with exceptional freshness and aromatic quality, were what drove us to create this new sparkling wine, with the aim of offering a different and special proposal.

We immediately identified Macabeo as the ideal variety. The central area of the Penedès plain, where the Nadal estate is located, has historically been considered the “kilometer 0” of Macabeo, which convinced us to make it the protagonist of this sparkling wine. The structure of the Macabeo wines from that vintage made them especially suitable to define them as brut sparkling wines, seeking a balance between fresh sensations and the sweetness brought by the dosage and expedition liqueurs, which have always been an identity signature of Nadal.

A name with history and identity

Salvatge. It was a name that, more than being chosen, the sparkling wine itself demanded. The word “Salvatge” was on everyone’s lips in 1984 when, tasting the results of the harvest, we discovered the freshness and great potential of the resulting wines. So, when a few years later the Salvatge Brut was born, as the product of that harvest, everyone was clear that it could not be named anything else.

A name that, from the start, already warns that this will be a provocative and unconventional sparkling wine. The freshness of the wines, complemented by the long bottle aging in the underground cellar, makes it a playful corpinnat but with extreme wisdom and maturity.

This rebellious and provocative spirit was also reflected in the bottle design. The atypical Salvatge pink of the collar and the label surprised and seduced the sparkling wine landscape of the Penedès. An iconic label that has evolved, but has not lost those identity traits.

Anterina, the heart of Salvatge

Since that first vintage, 40 years have passed, and Salvatge has become one of the most emblematic corpinnats of Nadal and a cult sparkling wine in the Penedès. The guiding thread that has kept the spirit of this wine intact has been and is the Macabeo vineyard l’Anterina. A vineyard planted in 1953 that, today, at 71 years old, continues to produce extraordinary grapes that give life to Salvatge, year after year.

Precisely, the great work done by this vineyard is what has allowed us to maintain this very characteristic style. Recently, climate change has shaken the climatic landscape of the Penedès, and it has been necessary to make adjustments, both in the vineyard and in the winery, to adapt to the new reality, but without losing the special magic discovered in 1984.

2021: A year reminiscent of the origins

The 2021 harvest shares characteristics with that of 1984: an exceptional soil sap at the beginning of the year, a cool spring, and a hot summer. These elements gave character to the Macabeo grapes, making it an extraordinary vintage that especially reminded us of 1984.

This fact drove us to create a special edition of the sparkling wine: the Salvatge Brut 40th Anniversary Edition. An edition that emulates the original, both in terms of the style of the wines used and the design of the label, and of which only 1984 bottles have been released to the market, paying homage to its origin. In fact, it is released exactly 40 years after the original Salvatge.
